The Ultimate Safari Checklist
The term "Big Five" originally referred to the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot. Today, it represents the ultimate wildlife checklist for photographers and safari-goers.
1. The Lion
The "King of Beasts" is abundant in the Serengeti. Prides can often be seen resting on kopjes (rocky outcrops) or stalking prey in the tall grass.
2. The Leopard
Elusive and solitary, leopards are masters of camouflage. They are often found resting in the branches of acacia trees, safe from other predators.
3. The Elephant
While the Serengeti has elephants, they are even more numerous in parks like Tarangire. These gentle giants travel in matriarchal herds and are highly intelligent.
4. The Buffalo
Cape Buffalo are known for their formidable temper. They congregate in large herds and can often be seen grazing on the open plains or near water sources.
5. The Rhinoceros
The rarest of the five, the Black Rhino is critically endangered due to poaching. The Ngorongoro Crater and the Moru Kopjes area of the Serengeti are your best bets for a sighting.
