Mt Meru

Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak (4,566m / 14,980 ft), is a spectacular trekking destination located in Arusha National Park. This 4-day trek offers a challenging yet rewarding experience, featuring diverse landscapes, rich wildlife, and breathtaking summit views of Kilimanjaro. The climb provides excellent acclimatization for Kilimanjaro and is a fantastic standalone adventure.

Geography and Climate

Mount Meru’s climate varies depending on the altitude, passing through five ecological zones:

  1. Lowland Savannah & Grassland (1,500m – 2,000m) – Warm and dry with scattered acacia trees.

  2. Montane Rainforest (2,000m – 2,800m) – Dense vegetation with frequent rain and high humidity.

  3. Moorland (2,800m – 3,800m) – Shrubs and heather dominate, with cooler temperatures.

  4. Alpine Desert (3,800m – 4,500m) – Harsh, windy, and rocky terrain with minimal vegetation.

  5. Summit Zone (4,500m+) – Arctic conditions, freezing temperatures, and low oxygen levels.
