The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north and is known for its remote wilderness, low crowds, and gradual ascent. This route is an excellent choice for trekkers seeking a quieter climb and a good acclimatization profile. The 7-day itinerary provides a slower ascent, increasing the success rate for summiting.

Trek Itinerary
Day 0: Arrival and Pre-Trek Orientation
Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, our dedicated team will be there to welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha (if you have opted for airport transfers). We highly recommend arriving at least one day before your trek to allow time for rest and final preparations.
In the evening, you’ll attend a pre-trek briefing at your hotel, where our expert guides will review your gear, discuss the climb itinerary, and arrange any necessary equipment rentals to ensure you’re fully prepared for your Kilimanjaro adventure.
Day 1: Nalemoru Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Elevation Gain: 675m
Habitat: Montane Forest
The trek begins at Nalemoru Gate, passing through lush rainforests and farmlands. Trekkers may spot Colobus monkeys and tropical birds. The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, where the first night is spent.
Day 2: Simba Camp (2,625m) to Second Camp (3,450m)
Distance: 11 km (6.8 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours
Elevation Gain: 975m
Habitat: Moorland
The trail continues through the heather and moorland zone, with stunning views of Kibo Peak. The vegetation becomes sparser, and the trek ends at Second Camp, offering incredible panoramic scenery.
Day 3: Second Camp (3,450m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
Distance: 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time:3-4 hours
Elevation Gain: 150m
Habitat: Moorland
Trek from Second Camp (3,450m) to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m), passing through moorland with stunning views of Kibo and the surrounding valleys. The hike is relatively short but involves some steep sections, offering a chance to acclimatize before reaching camp.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp (3,600m) to Mawenzi Turn hurt (4,315m)

- Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
- Elevation Gain: 730m
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Trek through alpine desert terrain as you ascend to Mawenzi Tarn Hut, located beneath the striking Mawenzi Peak. The trail becomes steeper, offering breathtaking views and a great opportunity for acclimatization.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation Gain: 388m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail crosses the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, a vast, barren alpine desert. Trekkers arrive at Kibo Hut, the base camp for the summit attempt. Early rest is essential before the midnight climb.
Day 6: Kibo Hut (4,703m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Distance: 21 km (13 miles) (Ascent & Descent)
Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
Elevation Gain: 1,192m
Elevation Loss: 2,175m
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Moorland
The summit attempt begins at midnight, with a steep climb to Gilman’s Point (5,685m), followed by the final trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, trekkers descend to Horombo Hut for rest.
Day 7: Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Marangu Gate (1,860m)
Distance: 20 km (12.4 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation Loss: 1,860m
Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest
The final descent retraces the trail through moorlands and rainforests, reaching Marangu Gate for certificate collection and transfers.
